Death and Forgiveness

For each and every one of the ancient philosophers, the idea that we should love our enemies would have registered as self-evidently absurd.

In January of 2018, I took a plane to Albuquerque to sit in a hospital with my dying father. To say my dad and I weren’t close is an understatement: we had cut ties when I was twelve, and rebuilt them for a time in my early twenties only to have them quickly fall apart again. His life had since become a mystery to me. I knew, however, that heart problems had kept him in and out of the hospital for years, and despite several surgical interventions his health had long been in decline. So when the call came from S., his girlfriend of nearly two decades who hadn’t spoken to me since I was a preteen, I wasn’t exactly surprised. That she called at all meant things were serious. I took a brief leave from my obligations and packed my bags for New Mexico…………..

Forgive and Give

God gave His one and only Son so that we might be forgiven. This core idea of the Christian faith seems to permeate Paul’s words as he works to reconcile the relationship with the Corinthians. A generous spirit is one that heals people. It's amazing to think of how a generous spirit in all ways, especially our money, could heal and give good news to so many.

Running from Rest

Christ has taken our failures and defeats and exchanges that yoke for his own.

Read the article at https://www.1517.org/articles/running-from-rest

When I was younger, I ran track. I wasn’t good. I honestly don’t think I can recall winning anything. Conceptually, I knew in those races that I needed to run faster if I wanted to win. Yet, at some point, the best I could do still wasn’t as fast or faster than those I was racing. I could try to give that little extra, but it just wasn’t there………..

[Sunday] Love The Sinner Hate The Sin - Say What

Planks and pearls - we embrace some, and others we throw away. It seems to absolutely love the sinner, we must keep the pearl and remove the plank.

Questions for the week

  1. When do you hear people use the phrase, “Love the sinner; hate the sin?”

  2. Read Matthew 7:1-6.   How would you summarize what Jesus says about sin and other people’s sin?

  3. Thinking of the words of Jesus in Matthew 7:1-6, and knowing how Jesus has handled your sin, what might be a more biblical phrase to use when talking about the sins of others?

What The Gospel Means For Rich People

What she needed was for her particular form of poverty to be seen so that the good news of Jesus could be shown to her.

Catherine appears flawless on her Instagram profile. The most recent picture shows her in a designer dress receiving an award for philanthropic leadership in our community. Last week she posted a picture of her husband, Tom, playing with their kids in the infinity pool behind their multimillion-dollar home. (“Catherine” and “Tom” are not their real names, but their story is true.)…………………………………..

Imagination: A Handmaid of the Gospel

Our Lord is not only the King of creation but the King of creativity.

Hang around Lutheran musicians long enough, and you will, no doubt, hear these famous words of Martin Luther. “Music is a handmaid of theology.” It is easy to understand why this quote is so popular. Luther’s words are rich in their simplicity, beauty, and truth. They point to the heart of every good Christian hymn: Christ crucified and risen for you.

[Sunday] To Thine Own Self Be True - Say What

This famous Shakespeare quote has gotten a modern, extremely selfish, makeover. Lets talk about Christ’s salvation for the world and the expectation to follow likewise.

The Problem with Self Optimization

A look at what Jesus taught about Christian self-optimization.

John came to college as a self-professed atheist, which made his appearance at the small campus Christian fellowship something of a curiosity. He had grown up without any religious background and wanted to know what the whole Christianity thing was about. John did the same for the other religious groups at the school. This voyeurism soon turned to devotion. He went to every meeting, every retreat, every bible study he could. In a matter of weeks, the atheist label he once wore proudly was soon exchanged for another: Christian…………………

The God Who Gives Life to the Dead

Unlike us, God is not limited by impossible situations.

The hand of the LORD came upon me…and set me down in the middle of a valley; it was full of bones […]

So I prophesied as I had been commanded; and as I prophesied, suddenly there was a noise, a rattling, and the bones came together, bone to its bone. I looked, and there were sinews on them, and flesh had come upon them, and skin had covered them; but there was no breath in them. Then he said to me, “Prophesy to the breath, prophesy, mortal, and say to the breath: Thus says the Lord GOD: Come from the four winds, O breath, and breathe upon these slain, that they may live.” (Ez 37:1, 7-9)……………………….

[Sunday] God Works In Mysterious Ways - Say What

This famous Christian phrase has its origins in a little-known song writer who was always dealing with depression and mantel illness. When our lives are not going the way that we would like we are able to say phrases like this as an expression of deep hope.

  1. Describe the mysterious ways you have seen God work?

  2. Read Mark 10: 17-27.   Looking at the context, why does Jesus say “with God all things are possible?”

  3. How might we misuse the saying “God works in mysterious ways?” According to the Bible, what ways does God work that are mysterious?

  4. Read Isaiah 55:6-10.   When you fail or feel down, what mysterious way of God can you cling onto to have hope?
