Kevin and Pastor at the FLGA Convention.

IMG_20180622_144221.jpg

Kevin and I (Pastor Cris) had the great opportunity to talk with Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service at the FLGA convention today. They were telling us of all the ways LIRS is supporting the children who have been in the news lately on our southern border. We were impressed by the care they are bringing in this very difficult situation.

Giving To Jesus Thankfully From The Heart

MOST BELIEVERS have questions about life. Sometimes there are answers, sometimes there aren’t. When life doesn’t seem to make sense, when we are tempted to rationalize our circumstances or explain our situation according to reason or Christian principles, the lesson from Job reminds us how far God is beyond our understanding. Our life in relationship with Him is more about trust than understanding. Trust is God’s gift that reminds us of our humanity and God’s incredible power, power that loves us and makes us His own.

New Trees In An Old World

A Christian is a perfectly free lord of all, subject to none. A Christian is a perfectly dutiful servant of all, subject to all.

All the verbs of our salvation are passive. God calls and gathers people to him through his Gospel. We don’t find him like an explorer finds the headwaters of a river. We are saved by Jesus’ death and resurrection. We don’t save ourselves. We are forgiven by God’s declaration of grace and peace. We can’t forgive ourselves and hope it sticks. It doesn’t, not in relation to God anyway. We are made holy by God, just by God’s Spirit coming close to us. No amount of effort on our part is going to get us one inch closer to heaven. We don’t even actively pray, the Holy Spirit has to pray for us (Romans 8:26). In relation to God, we are perfectly passive. We are receivers, not doers. That’s who God made us to be and that’s what faith reveals to us.

So then, are Christians just supposed to lay around and wait for the resurrection? Or maybe we’re supposed to live large since, we imagine, we can’t do anything one way or the other to affect our salvation. When Christ busts in and permanently interrupts life with his grace and favor, what’s a person to do? The trick is getting the question right. Ask a question that begins with us and we’ll get an answer that serves to satisfy our desires and wants. Then we’re off again, working on our self-salvation projects in the name of God. Ask a question that begins with what Christ does for us, and we’ll get an answer that leavens the whole loaf.....

Teach us to Pray - Thy Will Be Done on Earth as it is in Heaven

What does this mean? How is God’s will done? God’s will is done when He breaks and hinders every evil plan and purpose of the devil, the world, and our sinful nature, which do not want us to hallow God’s name or let His kingdom come; and when He strengthens and keeps us firm in His Word and faith until we die.

Teach us to Pray - Thy Kingdom Come

The kingdom of God certainly comes by itself without our prayer, but we pray in this petition that it may come to us also. How does God’s kingdom come? God’s kingdom comes when our heavenly Father gives us His Holy Spirit, so that by His grace we believe His holy Word and lead godly lives here in time and there in eternity.

I Am The Vine

Many times in life it can seem like we are uprooted, that we are disconnected and just adrift like a tumbleweed in an old western. Jesus knows His disciples and His followers are going to feel this way. To all of those who feel disconnected, Jesus says that He is the vine, and He has sent the advocate to connect us all.

I Am The Way, Truth, and the Life

The Lord’s disciple Thomas asks Jesus, ‘‘Lord where are you going? Can you show us the way?’’ Thomas wants to know the way. What can he do, what can he be so that he can be with the Father? Jesus looks at him and says that he, Jesus, is the way.

I Am The Resurrection and Life

Jesus’ good friend Lazarus gets sick and dies. When Jesus finally gets to his town, Martha comes running out to Jesus with tears in her eyes and says, ‘’IF ONLY you had been here, he would not have died.’’ We often live with the cloud of ‘If Only’ over us, which causes us to slow and not see the light breaking forth.

Why Do We Go to Church?

I believe that Jesus would say to us what he said to Peter, “Unless I wash you, you have no part with me.

For most of my Christian experience I was taught and I taught others that church was primarily a place to go to serve, to use your gifts, to bless others. “You don’t go to church to be served but to serve!” This became for me a mantra that I championed for many years as a pastor. I felt it was my duty to deconstruct the “consumer” mentality that so many American Christians seemed to espouse. This emphasis to do something for God actually sells very well in our pragmatic culture. You can rally an army of eager Christians who busy themselves with things to do believing themselves to be living radically for God. In fact, like Peter, we find it very difficult to allow Jesus to serve us (John 13:6). However, I believe that Jesus would say to us what he said to Peter, “Unless I wash you, you have no part with me.” (vs. 8).

Certainly the Church ought to be a place where Christians are using their gifts for the good of their neighbor. The NT is full of “one another” imperatives and after washing the disciple's feet Jesus tells his original disciples to follow his example and “wash one another’s feet.” (vv. 14-17) We miss the thrust of this passage however if we lose sight of the fact that at the heart of this command is the ongoing need for the Christian to allow Jesus to wash their own feet. The Christian, according to Jesus, is already clean but has need of a perpetual spiritual cleansing that while already accomplished has ongoing implications as we continue to battle with the world, the flesh, and the devil................

I Am The Good Shepherd

When God’s people hear ‘shepherd,’ they automatically think of the messiah, a king from God. Jesus uses this understanding to say that he is the Good Shepherd, that he is not in this for himself but for everyone else.

I Am The Gate

When I was young, it seems like I was told that Jesus the gate in the sense that I had to choose the correct gate and that Gate was Jesus. However, Jesus wants us to know that he is the gate. He is the one who keeps the robbers out and keeps the sheep in. Jesus is our gate, keeping us safe.
