Insiders - The Temple God Builds

We love the grace of God. But what does grace actually mean? It means that no matter the names we call people or the barriers we put up between them, God saves them and us by his action.

Paul is encouraging us, saying through Jesus, the promise of Abraham, has come true, that those who were once outsiders are now insiders; those who were lost are now found. “A plan for the fullness of time, to unite all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth.” Ephesians 1:10

Insiders - No Racing In A Museum

We love to see classic cars, to look at old race cars or marvel at our car from our youth sitting in the garage. But those machines were not built to just be looked at. They were built to be set free on a track to race the day away.

Paul is encouraging us, saying through Jesus, the promise of Abraham, has come true, that those who were once outsiders are now insiders; those who were lost are now found. “A plan for the fullness of time, to unite all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth.” Ephesians 1:10
— Insiders

Teach us to Pray - Hannah's Prayer

Hannah cannot have children, and her husband's other wife is constantly making fun of her. She is not even safe in the temple praying because High Priest Eli thinks she is drunk in the temple. However, we see God uses the humble to point to His true King.

Teach us to Pray - Yours is the Kingdom, Power, and the Glory

What does this mean? This means that I should be certain that these petitions are pleasing to our Father in heaven, and are heard by Him; for He Himself has commanded us to pray in this way and has promised to hear us. Amen, amen means “yes, yes, it shall be so.”

Here is an interesting article about the ending of the Lord's Prayer

Teach us to Pray - Deliver Us From Evil

What does this mean? We pray in this petition, in summary, that our Father in heaven would rescue us from every evil of body and soul, possessions and reputation, and finally, when our last hour comes, give us a blessed end, and graciously take us from this valley of sorrow to Himself in heaven.

Teach us to Pray - Lead us not into Tempation

What does this mean? God tempts no one. We pray in this petition that God would guard and keep us so that the devil, the world, and our sinful nature may not deceive us or mislead us into false belief, despair, and other great shame and vice. Although we are attacked by these things, we pray that we may finally overcome them and win the victory.

Teach us to Pray - Forgive us our sins.

What does this mean? We pray in this petition that our Father in heaven would not look at our sins, or deny our prayer because of them. We are neither worthy of the things for which we pray, nor have we deserved them, but we ask that He would give them all to us by grace, for we daily sin much and surely deserve nothing but punishment. So we too will sincerely forgive and gladly do good to those who sin against us.

Kevin and Pastor at the FLGA Convention.

IMG_20180622_144221.jpg

Kevin and I (Pastor Cris) had the great opportunity to talk with Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service at the FLGA convention today. They were telling us of all the ways LIRS is supporting the children who have been in the news lately on our southern border. We were impressed by the care they are bringing in this very difficult situation.

Giving To Jesus Thankfully From The Heart

MOST BELIEVERS have questions about life. Sometimes there are answers, sometimes there aren’t. When life doesn’t seem to make sense, when we are tempted to rationalize our circumstances or explain our situation according to reason or Christian principles, the lesson from Job reminds us how far God is beyond our understanding. Our life in relationship with Him is more about trust than understanding. Trust is God’s gift that reminds us of our humanity and God’s incredible power, power that loves us and makes us His own.

New Trees In An Old World

A Christian is a perfectly free lord of all, subject to none. A Christian is a perfectly dutiful servant of all, subject to all.

All the verbs of our salvation are passive. God calls and gathers people to him through his Gospel. We don’t find him like an explorer finds the headwaters of a river. We are saved by Jesus’ death and resurrection. We don’t save ourselves. We are forgiven by God’s declaration of grace and peace. We can’t forgive ourselves and hope it sticks. It doesn’t, not in relation to God anyway. We are made holy by God, just by God’s Spirit coming close to us. No amount of effort on our part is going to get us one inch closer to heaven. We don’t even actively pray, the Holy Spirit has to pray for us (Romans 8:26). In relation to God, we are perfectly passive. We are receivers, not doers. That’s who God made us to be and that’s what faith reveals to us.

So then, are Christians just supposed to lay around and wait for the resurrection? Or maybe we’re supposed to live large since, we imagine, we can’t do anything one way or the other to affect our salvation. When Christ busts in and permanently interrupts life with his grace and favor, what’s a person to do? The trick is getting the question right. Ask a question that begins with us and we’ll get an answer that serves to satisfy our desires and wants. Then we’re off again, working on our self-salvation projects in the name of God. Ask a question that begins with what Christ does for us, and we’ll get an answer that leavens the whole loaf.....

Teach us to Pray - Thy Will Be Done on Earth as it is in Heaven

What does this mean? How is God’s will done? God’s will is done when He breaks and hinders every evil plan and purpose of the devil, the world, and our sinful nature, which do not want us to hallow God’s name or let His kingdom come; and when He strengthens and keeps us firm in His Word and faith until we die.

Teach us to Pray - Thy Kingdom Come

The kingdom of God certainly comes by itself without our prayer, but we pray in this petition that it may come to us also. How does God’s kingdom come? God’s kingdom comes when our heavenly Father gives us His Holy Spirit, so that by His grace we believe His holy Word and lead godly lives here in time and there in eternity.
